In 1966, Isaac asimov‘s Foundation trilogy was voted best sci-fi series of all time at the Hugo Awards. Other series have certainly surpassed it since, although it is still considered the work that codified the genre. Despite its fame, because the series is a galactic-level epic told over roughly 500 years, with dozens of characters, conflicts and stories, anybodyunderstood how to bring Foundation in real action. The novelty of Apple TV + Foundation the show didn’t get it either.

Foundation the tv series is not Foundation the series of books. There are a few bones from the original story in there, of course, including the premise. Mathematician / psychologist Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) creates the field of psychohistory, in which the future can be pathetically predicted– not for individuals, but for humanity in general – and discovered the horrible truth that the 12,000 year old Galactic Empire will fall, starting a dark new age that will last for 30,000 years. It cannot be stopped, but it can be reduced to a mere millennium by creating a repository of human knowledge to become the foundation of a new civilization. It’s an incredibly good premise that could never be served in a movie, and a TV adaptation was never going to be easy. The first one Foundation book alone is made up of five separate short stories that have no character in common and take place over 150 years. Very, very few of these characters are developed because we spend so little time with them. They are not history – the Foundation is and how it develops over time.

Viewers would naturally find it difficult to invest in a show where the overall cast and conflict changes with each episode. Showrunner David S. Goyer—Author of around a billion DC superhero movies — limits Foundationfrom the first season to the first two-fifths of the original novel and binds them together in a somewhat forced way. Goyer’s idea of ​​having Lee Pace plays an eternally cloned Emperor Cleon is a nifty way to give the series a (fundamentally) cohesive antagonist. Changing the gender and ethnicity of characters is a must for modern times – there were hardly any female characters in Asimov’s early books – and, of course, that doesn’t affect the story in any way. And he starts the show off with a bit of a sci-fi show that will absolutely inspire audiences to root Hari’s grand plan for success.

Here’s the catch: making a 10-episode season out of around 100 pages of text is an act of insanity comparable to shooting The Hobbit in three films. There is so much to add to fill these episodes, which seem so much longer than the hour they typically last. Some of these additions are incredibly welcome. Hari’s proteges Gaal Dornick and Salvor Hardin (in two terrific performances by Lou Llobell and Leah Harvey, respectively) get broad and much-needed stories to develop their characters. Emperor Cleon, who barely appears in the first book, not only has his own major storyline, but is technically made up of three people: Brother Day (Pace), younger brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton), and senior brother Dusk ( Terrence Mann).

Most of these additions are invented from scratch, having nothing to do with the history of the Foundation. Honestly, after most of the second episode, the show and the books are pretty much unrecognizable. Even if you walk in without reading a page of Asimov, you’ll still notice the long storylines that don’t go anywhere, the padding, and the weird choices that the characters on the show make to keep the plot from moving forward. Cheap, absurd melodrama fills the series (somehow Seldin’s plan suddenly stops working because two people are in a relationship, so he has to break them up). Then there’s the terror of the show that people can’t make certain connections, so it shows something, the character comments on it, and then maybe flashes someone who says something relevant. even though it was said three minutes ago. The show also wants to have bench laser battles and ship fights and spacewalk crashes and junk, none of which offer something you’ve never seen before, and are typically used for running out of time anyway.

I can’t complain about how it feels – despite the fact that psychohistory shouldn’t be able to predict individual actions as well – Hari’s plan relies exclusively on individual people, because that’s a problem with the Foundation books too. But that’s made worse in the series because Hari must have somehow predicted a shootout survivor and his ability to stop a bomb from exploding at the last second. It’s hard to worry about a plan when nothing ever seems to unfold according to him. The second and bigger problem is that all of the generic sci-fi action goes directly against what made the Foundation so beloved series – a celebration of knowledge, history, science and human relations, and the hope for a new galactic civilization that will flow from it.

Foundation does not want to be Foundation. He wants to be the heady, thoughtful and revealing first season of Westworld, so he pontificates on politics, religion and souls, but he doesn’t have the depth to say anything important. The television series also wants to be Game Of Thrones with its political maneuvers (most of which are roughly invented for the show), but once Hari Seldon’s spaceship takes off, these Imperial policies have little to do with the Foundation. It also wants to be a sci-fi action show. He’s so busy trying to be all these things that he doesn’t have time to be Foundation. For people who don’t know or care about the source material, the result is extremely pretty sci-fi, but not particularly compelling. For people who know or are fans of Isaac Asimov and his work, I feel obligated to warn you that if you watch the show, you will see a scene so infuriating that you will tear your TV in two with your bare hands; then you will realize how useless the scene was, and tear it in four.

by Goyer Foundation is not Asimov’s Foundation. It’s not an adaptation, and it’s so different that calling it “inspired by the works of Isaac Asimov” still seems like an exaggeration. Maybe it’s really impossible to bring this flagship sci-fi work into any other medium, but other shows could still do a much better job than this one.

    Joker fans have the chance to see the official live concert premiere of The Joker soundtrack.

    The concert, which takes place on Sunday September 26 at the London Eventim Apollo, is an opportunity for the audience to watch Todd Phillips’ film The Joker (2019), accompanied by an orchestra playing the score by Hildur Guðnadóttir.

    The Joker received several awards during the 2020 Film Awards season, including an Oscar for Best Original Music / Score.

    The performance will be led by Jeff Atmajian, conductor and orchestrator of the soundtrack, with Dave Mahoney directing the remainder of the UK tour dates, and guests will be able to buy tickets through Ticketmaster.

    After the London debut there will be concerts across the UK and Ireland.

    It airs in Glasgow on October 14, Edinburgh on October 15, Dublin on 17, Birmingham on 19, Bath on 20, Southend-on-Sea on 25, Nottingham on 27, Brighton on 28, Manchester on November 1, Liverpool on 2 and Cardiff on 9.

    The show will embark on an international tour after these dates, with more dates to be announced soon.

    Can you live the life of the most famous, sweetest, deadliest secret agent? Or, to borrow the title of another spy movie, is this mission impossible?

    As Daniel hangs up his Walther PPK after five Bond films, I offered to take his place.

    Becoming Bond may cost the best part of £ 300,000, but being the world’s best spy isn’t all about wearing pointy suits and being incredibly fit, irresistible to women, and able to drink copious amounts of alcohol.

    For decades, filmmaker Paul Kyriazi, 74, studied the hero and wrote the book How to Live the James Bond Lifestyle.

    He says, “It starts in your mind, spreads to your bedroom, then to your apartment or your house. Organize it. Keep your money under control. Start carrying more money. Bond carries money on a money clip.

    He recommends reading a book a week, dressing well even at home, keeping your car clean, and rocking freely.

    Never give up on your mission … but you can change direction. And when it comes to being a lothario, Paul says you should aim to become an “entertainment director”.

    But above all, he advises, be creative and non-competitive. “Don’t compete with your friends or others – be creative with yourself, and it’s powerful.”

    Armed with Paul’s guidance, it was time to live and let go of trying to become Bond. And if I failed, I could always try another day.

    Get Bond’s body

    As a man more used to wielding a pen than a pistol, my spy skills left a lot to be desired.

    Reeling out simple lines while sending down bad guys and escaping being cut in half by a laser wouldn’t be my forte. But I thought I could watch the game.

    For my money, Daniel Craig’s bespoke tuxedo from Casino Royale is as classically Bond as a bomb in a cigarette case. So I headed over to Slater Menswear, which has its own tailoring collection and offers free alterations to suits and jackets for the perfect fit.

    The serve comes in handy when, during my measurements, it turns out that I have “deceptively short arms”.

    Dinner suit sorted, my other physical differences from the last Bond buff needed to be addressed.

    50 years ago, an action hero’s non-sculpted father body might have been alluring enough, but the bar for Bond’s physique was irreversibly raised when Daniel Craig emerged from the sea as a Greek god. in trunk.

    So I set up a session at the Fitness Lab in Soho, central London, where elite trainer Ash Wright, 28, put me through a grueling weightlifting program.

    Ash says, “To get a physique closer to that of Daniel Craig, you will have to go through a phase of ‘body recomposition’. It is a process of building muscle while losing fat to change your overall body composition – the muscle to fat ratio.

    “The bond has to be built to go, not for the show. His physique is a by-product of the training he does to meet the demands of his job, rather than aesthetics.

    Feeling pumped (and humiliated) after our session, it was time for the next step in my mission.

    Bond doesn’t just drive in style, he also flies in luxury. So I went to Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire for a private plane trip over London.

    I arranged the trip through Wingly – a flight sharing site that matches passengers with private pilots for sightseeing flights and local excursions.

    My 1,500 foot tall getaway was in a six-seater £ 100,000 PA-32 and offered truly spectacular views of the sets of some of Bond’s most memorable scenes.

    We visited the Millennium Dome, where Pierce Brosnan’s explosive boat chase ended in the jaw-dropping 1999 opening sequence The World Is Not Enough.

    And we flew over Epsom Downs Racecourse, which took on the role of St. Petersburg Airport in 1995 GoldenEye.

    We even spotted the Olympic Stadium where Bond and “the Queen” jumped from a helicopter with matching Union Jack parachutes during the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony.

    I don’t have a license to kill, but I have a driver’s license. So I had to get behind the wheel of an Aston Martin.

    007’s love affair with the British marque began with Sean Connery’s DB5 with an ejection passenger seat in the 1964 Goldfinger.

    The DB5 stars in No Time To Die, along with its modern counterpart: the £ 280,000 DBS Superleggera.

    Grange Aston Martin, in Hatfield, Herts, trusted me enough to give me a ride. Like all good secret agents, the Superleggera is a master of disguise.

    He looks like a carbon fiber distillation of pure elegance and sophistication, but pull the trigger on sport mode and he transforms into a fierce animal. Its 715 hp V12 engine is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and accelerating to 211 mph.

    Casino Royale

    As the evening approached, it was time to head to one of Bond’s favorite haunts: the casino.

    London’s West End Racecourse has three game floors with private rooms for the big players. I sit down to play a few “strokes” of baccarat – the card game that Bond plays in many movies, starting with Dr. No. 1962.

    Unlike my usual luck with scratch cards, it turned out I got the gift. I turned my £ 12,500 in tokens into around £ 16,000.

    This meant that I could treat myself to a well-deserved vodka martini at an exclusive bar. I head over to Quaglino in Mayfair, where 32-year-old Chief Mixologist Michele Lombardi explains the importance of perfection when brewing Bond’s go-to drink.

    In addition to the classic version of vodka – which Michele says should be brewed rather than shaken – Quaglino’s also makes Vesper martinis, the drink Bond invented in Casino Royale, and a delicious martini with white truffle oil from Michele’s design.

    He says, “Anyone who asks for a martini knows exactly how it tastes like.

    “You can’t make mistakes. If anyone asks for one, it’s not their first time. It’s not a cocktail you want to try, it’s something you already drink.

    A series of small earthquakes in Spain’s Canary Islands have put authorities on alert for a possible volcanic eruption, but a much greater danger could lie beneath the seas off the island chain which some scientists believe could cause waves of several hundred meters high radiating in the Atlantic.

    Authorities have detected more than 4,200 tremors in what scientists are calling an “earthquake swarm” around the island of La Palma since last Saturday.

    La Palma is the fifth largest island in the volcanic chain, located 100 km off the coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean.

    Earthquake swarms can indicate an impending eruption, and in this case, the earthquakes raised concerns about the Cumbre Vieja, a dormant volcanic ridge that last erupted in 1971.

    Before that, the volcano erupted in 1949 and it is the changes brought about by this eruption that some believe endanger the entire structure of the volcano.

    The alarm was first sounded at the turn of the millennium by Dr Simon Day and his colleagues at University College London.

    It was a few years before the devastating Boxing Day tsunami reminded humanity of the terrifying force of earthquake waves.

    A year later, in 2001, Day teamed up with Dr. Steven N Ward of the University of California to write a study on the destructive potential of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

    Day’s original research in 2000 found that any future eruption of Cumbre Vieja could dislodge a massive part of the island of La Palma.

    While later studies have tempered some of Day and Ward’s dire predictions, there is still a risk.

    After the 1949 eruption, ruptures were found on the surface. In Day and Ward’s later study, these ruptures were described as “threatening” because they were evidence of an underground detachment.

    In other words, the crack does not stop at the surface.

    In the event of a collapse caused by a new eruption, Day found that between 150 and 500 cubic kilometers of rock could slide through the ocean at 100 meters per second.

    The immense force caused by such a landslide would generate huge waves, several hundred meters high, which would propagate across the Atlantic and strike the coasts of the Americas at heights of up to 25 meters.

    The pair found that while there is no historical record of a mega-tsunami caused by the lateral collapse of an oceanic volcano, the geological record shows clear evidence of their power.

    That is, modern humans may not have been around to witness it, but it has happened.

    And could happen again.

    The way of the waves

    Day and Ward’s 2001 article reveals their theory of how waves could radiate from La Palma, causing widespread devastation across four continents.

    First, as the massive amount of rocks and earth crashed into the ocean, a huge water dome would build up, reaching heights of up to 900 meters.

    In 5 minutes, this wave would have passed the landslide that had created it and, 50 km from La Palma, its height would have decreased.

    In less than 10 minutes, waves of several hundred meters high would break over the western islands of the Canary Islands.

    Between 15 minutes and an hour after the event, the eastern Canary Islands would be affected and the waves would eventually reach the African continent, at heights of between 50 and 100 meters, bringing with them immense devastation and loss of life. human.

    But to the west, in the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, the waves would stretch for 500 km, with wave heights still reaching 60 meters.

    After the three hour mark, the long arc would turn around to hit Europe, Spain and England with wave heights of 5 to 7 meters.

    Then, as waves of around 10 meters hit the North American coast in Newfoundland, larger waves of 15 to 20 meters would hit the coast of Brazil and other parts of northern South America.

    Nine hours after the event, the US state of Florida would face the waves.

    Day and Ward predict waves “parading in a dozen or more cycles” and reaching heights of up to 25 meters.

    For lowland Florida, the resulting flooding would extend far inland.

    For the context, the largest wave recorded during the 2004 tsunami was estimated between 15 and 30 meters, recorded on the west coast of the Indonesian province of Aceh.

    Will it happen?

    Day and Ward’s research shocked many when it was published in 2001, but subsequent studies of the potential consequences of a collapse in Cumbe Vieja have significantly downplayed the risk.

    Over the past few years, and often thanks to the hard-won experience of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, scientists using different models have found that the waves created can be considerably smaller.

    Some have argued that not all ridge collapse could occur with the force described in Ward and Day’s article, with some arguing that a collapse will occur in stages.

    Others pointed out that the underwater topography could reduce wave heights in many areas.

    But most agree that if a collapse were to occur, large waves would be generated, which would prove tragic for the Canary Islands themselves.

    Where scientists differ is how far away the effects would be felt and to what extent.

    Possible eruption

    Officials in the Canary Islands said they had no indication that an eruption was imminent, and a scientific committee monitoring the activity said the number of tremors and their magnitude declined on Thursday this week.

    Despite this, the scientific committee of the special civil protection and emergency response plan for volcanic risks warned that there could be a rapid and renewed upsurge in earthquakes and maintained the level of public alert at yellow, according to the private Spanish press agency Europa Press.

    “The decrease in seismic activity may be transient and does not necessarily imply a halt in reactivation,” regional emergency services said in a statement after a meeting with politicians, experts in volcanology and civil protection authorities.

    Volcano warnings are announced based on risk level, ranging from green, yellow, orange, and red.

    The scientific committee of the special civil protection and emergency response plan for volcanic hazards reported that depressions in the ground up to 10 centimeters deep have formed – an event often attributed to movements of magma.

    Before a volcano erupts, there is a gradual increase in seismic activity which can build up over an extended period.

    And even if the volcano erupts, it is not certain that the landslide will occur.

    In 2001, Dr Simon Day said: “The collapse will occur in a future eruption after days or weeks of warping and precursor earthquakes. time to plan and respond.

    “Cumbre Vieja eruptions occur at intervals of decades to about a century and there may be a number of eruptions before it collapses,” Day added.

    “While the likelihood of a year-over-year collapse is therefore low, the resulting tsunami would be a major disaster with indirect effects around the world. Cumbre Vieja should watch closely for any sign of activity. impending volcanic activity and the deformation that would precede the collapse. “

    Gary McMurty, a landslide scientist, told New Scientist in 2001 that we shouldn’t panic about Ward and Day’s original findings.

    I worry about the long term impact of losing such a good start. You could always tell a student at Watford – Tony had wired them in a very special way. I didn’t take the Watford course, but I’m often asked the old man “How did you get started in advertising?” »Question.

    The quick answer is that my old classmate Paul Bruce needed a “copywriter” to be part of a “creative team” to get into “advertising.” I literally didn’t know anything – he had done graphics and was knowledgeable about advertising. I did everything he told us to do.

    He had two great ideas: one was that we were going to see a new startup agency called Mother. The other was to try to take this course organized by D&AD, the D&AD Student Workshop. As the title suggests, this was a workshop organized by D&AD for students, every few months or so.

    But you had to qualify to participate, which involved responding to a brief they had published and submitting your work in response to the brief. To prove how long ago that was, the qualifying entry package that was set was “a poster campaign to kick off the next Millennium Dome.” I want to say…

    Our work on this brief in the summer of 1997 was not good (I vaguely remember the cave paintings in the Dome and some sort of “it was always meant to be” message) but somehow other, we took the course. Paul was and is a very good art director, so it was probably so.

    The format was simple. Each week, you and the other fresh-faced, naive, and hungry aspiring advertising creatives show up at this week’s agency to pitch your campaign responding to this week’s brief to the creative directors who defined it; present in front of everyone, in a real live advertising agency, to real creatives, whose work you have actually seen.

    One week we introduced the creators of the Tango work that we loved, at HHCL. The next day we felt incredibly overwhelmed by the red-panted alien scenery of JWT Knightsbridge.

    The lesson I remember the most was Tim Mellors at Gray telling us to worry less about the intricacies of the idea and instead focus on how you present it in front of all these people. To be fair, our idea was to respond to his Tower of London briefing with a collage of Cilla Black and Gary Barlow with the phrase “Who would you put in the Tower?” So he was probably right.

    Most importantly, each week we went to the pub with the rest of the workshop student teams, to heal our collective wounds and exchange stories of possible connections. Who lined up the elusive locations and where? Who were the cool creatives and in which agencies?

    The other band members that Paul and I naturally turned to were a young team, Dave Monk and Matt Waller. They were then working, before their incredibly successful stint at BBH, in that other cornerstone of Soho, the Slug & Lettuce in Leicester Square.

    Dave would become Nils [Leonard’s] ECD assistant at Gray, then in an outrageous act of kismet was already part of the gang when I arrived at Publicis Groupe – he’s been the ECD of Publicis Poke for a few years now.

    Dave and I talked a lot about this D&AD student workshop, and how bizarre it is that a few Thursday evenings in Fall 97 saw a 20+ year association, mutual career path, and friendship across an industry. neither of us were prepared for from a distance.

    D&AD stopped doing the student workshop in this form at some point in the 2000s. It evolved in different forms – most notable being the excellent D&AD Shift, which set the bar very high by widening the aperture. of our industry. And of course there are courses and competitions that just weren’t there in the prehistoric industry of 1997, from the Portfolio Course to SCA and The Talent Business’s Cream, to Brixton Finishing School and of course to the Publicis Groupe Open Apprenticeship.

    But there should never be a limit to the opportunities. And the real bright idea came from Emma De La Fosse. Emma is the CCO of Digitas. Prior to that, she won numerous awards as CCO of Ogilvy One. But more importantly, before that, she was an equally ignorant member of the summer 97 D&AD student workshop. Different group of students from Dave and I, but exactly the same experience.

    Emma pointed out that we have the ability here at Publicis Groupe to replicate this experience that we all had at the start of our careers. A brief, creative and sharp introduction to a world of advertising, digital, public relations, healthcare and media.

    We are therefore launching the Not the D&AD Publicis student workshop: a six-week course, in person, in an agency, which follows the same structure, in all our agencies. We’ll aim to run it three times a year, and we’ll mix agencies and disciplines every time. But to start this fall. we will move from Saatchi & Saatchi to Digitas to MSL (PR and experience) to Leo Burnett in Langland (health) to Publicis Poke.

    You will have a creative room and CDs from this agency that might notice your work. And just as important, you’ll have a room of peers, or potential creative partners that you might come to know over the next 20 years.

    So if you feel like it all you have to do is respond to our brief. This is the issue that all creatives in our industry will soon be faced with. Well, good luck. And I hope to see you in the fall.

    Cynic has announced details of his long-awaited new album, Ascension Codes, and debuted “Mythical Serpents”, the first track from the ambitious and guest-filled album which will be released on November 26th.

    London’s Greenwich Peninsula Design District has officially opened, with buildings designed by SelgasCano, 6a Architects, Adam Khan Architects, Architecture 00, HNNA, Barozzi Veiga, David Kohn Architects and Mole Architects.


    Created by the developer Dragon Knight, the group of workspace buildings for creatives is located near the O2 event arena designed by Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners, also known as the Millennium Dome, at the tip of London’s Greenwich Peninsula.

    The development, which contains a variety of workspaces for 1,800 people, is made up of 16 buildings, with two buildings each designed by eight different architecture studios.

    In an effort to replicate the variety of buildings and styles found in cities developed over a long period of time, each of the studios has not been told what the others are designing.

    “The decision to involve eight leading architects was integral to our vision for Design District from the start,” said Helen Arvanitakis, Director of Design District.

    “We were determined to make it a vibrant, engaging and exciting city – a place that pushes you into action and stimulates creative thinking,” she told Dezeen.

    “This eclectically calculated approach no doubt created the possibility of clashes and contrasts, but we knew we had to take the risk if we were to build a truly innovative place that would reflect and inspire the diverse creative community it was intended to. to serve.”

    Masterplaned by the British studio HNNA, the buildings occupy a rectangular site directly behind the Gateway Pavilions building designed by Marks Barfield Architects.

    Twelve of the buildings are arranged around the perimeter of the site with a square at its center.

    “I want them to feel like they’re not in Kansas anymore, that they’ve entered a place separate from the surrounding city,” Arvanitakis said. “I want visitors to feel the need to explore – to look around the corners and to linger in the courtyards.”

    “By keeping the building low-rise, encouraging architectural diversity, and avoiding the symmetry and predictability of the urban grid, we made Design District feel as if it had grown organically rather than simply imposed on the Greenwich Peninsula, “she continued.

    Directly behind the Gateway pavilions are a trio of buildings – one by Spanish studios Barozzi Veiga and SelgasCano and one by Architecture 00.

    Barozzi Veiga’s aluminum clad building contains additional space for nearby Ravensbourne University in London, while Architecture 00’s concrete-framed building is topped with a basketball court – one of many facilities common areas for people working on development.

    Between these two buildings is a transparent structure of SelgasCano which contains the Design District Canteen, which is open to the public and contains a bar and six restaurants.

    SelgasCano’s second building is a block that reproduces the style of the canteen, while Barozzi Veiga’s second building is an aluminum clad block on the other side of the site.

    To mark the development, the words “design district” were written on a roof mounted sign reminiscent of the first American billboards above one of the David Kohn Architects‘two buildings.

    The two David Kohn Architects buildings in the development combine vivid green ironwork with glass blocks and solid red brick columns.

    Alongside David Kohn Architects-signpost building stands one block away Adam Khan Architects, which has exposed concrete walls and yellow balconies.

    In addition to the workspaces, a co-working space called an Office occupies two buildings – the second concrete-frame building designed by Architecture 00 and a white building by HNNA with curved white walls.

    The interiors of both buildings were designed by UK studio Roz Barr Architects.

    Also on the site are a pair of buildings designed by 6a Architects with inclined facades adorned with diamond patterns.

    The Mole Architects’ contribution to the development was a Corten steel clad block and a building with a metal facade painted in an “iridescent” color.

    Developer Dragon Knight aims to develop a community of creative businesses in the Design District. To attract organizations to development, it offers the units at what it believes to be competitive rates.

    Design District will offer a site-wide blended rent target of £ 25 per square foot. Starting at £ 7 per square foot, rents will be scaled according to the workspace to be rented and size and needs of the tenant, and be reviewed regularly, ”said the developer.

    “Large organizations will be able to occupy buildings at rents proportional to their size, in order to reduce the rental burden on small businesses,” he continued.

    “This rental structure is designed to create an ecosystem of businesses of varying sizes, each contributing according to their means, and ensuring that any individual or organization that wishes to be part of Design District can afford to find accommodation here.”

    A massive nu-metal, industrial and horror-horror tour has just been announced for 2022. Static-X will headline the “Rise of the Machine” tour with the support of Fear Factory, Dope, Mushroomhead and Twiztid.

It’s a reminder that the Greenwich Peninsula is an area that has seen more than its fair share of fresh starts over the past 25 years.

    In the late 1990s, this former industrial area – once the site of Europe’s largest gas plant – was decontaminated and redeveloped by Tony Blair’s Labor government, who built the Dome and attempted to transform the surrounding area. in the most recent village of London. In 2012, former Mayor Boris Johnson’s cable car arrived, supposedly erected to draw visitors to the area but widely ridiculed as a white elephant; in 2019, it was The Tide, an “elevated linear park” along the Thames, billed as London’s response to New York’s High Line (one critic was harsher: “unnecessary madness”).

    The latest reboot comes courtesy of developer Knight Dragon, who has led the Peninsula Renewal for nine years and must hope his vision for the region is the one that remains. Called the Design District, it is built around a 150,000 square foot “creative district”, providing affordable workspace for 1,800 people. Comprised of 16 buildings designed by eight architectural firms, it will serve as a hub for designers, fashion designers, artists and tech entrepreneurs, while being a new destination for anyone interested in these worlds.

    With 12 of the buildings open in time for this month’s London Design Festival, this is a development that aims to show that the post-pandemic city and its creatives are not just open for business, but ready to all that will follow.

    As I wandered the site last month, from offices to dance studios and designer workshops, what is most striking is the amalgamation of aesthetics, angles and facades in a fusion of architectural styles. This is the result of designing the studios “blind” to each other, an unconventional approach taken by lead planners HNNA and Knight Dragon, but which lends itself to the variety of spaces needed to house diverse residents. .

    As you walk through narrow passages that open onto “workers’ courtyards”, there is no lack of moments of discovery: from the landscaping that changes with the seasons to the small Roman atrium-style seats where you can imagine a show in Classes. The new public spaces, designed by Copenhagen urban designers Schulze + Grassov, were influenced by those in Tokyo and the Moroccan souks, according to Matthew Dearlove, design manager for the Greenwich Peninsula.

    “With height restrictions in place to preserve the view of the Dome, it gave us the opportunity to create a neighborhood with its own identity,” says Dearlove. “Immersive” and “productive” were the keywords in the design brief he described, as were “low cost”. Not only leveraging its flashy architecture to tempt creatives in the area, workspaces are priced at £ 5 per square foot for the first 12 months. Even taking into account the additional service charges – starting at £ 10 per square foot and roughly equivalent to areas like Shoreditch or Clerkenwell – it’s very competitive.

    Helen Arvanitakis, director of the Design District, said part of her ambition was to help companies get back on their feet after Covid-19 and raise the level of studio space that creatives expect. “As an industry, [it] is one of the UK’s best exports, ”she says. “Why don’t we build specially designed, beautiful and safe spaces for them to do their best? “

    One of the founding tenants is the design and technology-driven University of Ravensbourne, which moved into a purpose-built headquarters near the peninsula in 2010. Its new Institute for Creativity and Technology will be housed in a four-story building with a reflective aluminum facade and floor-to-ceiling windows, designed by Spanish-Italian architects Barozzi Veiga. It is a center for higher studies, research and industrial partnerships at the cutting edge of creative technology.

    “Harnessing the passion of graduates and connecting it with businesses will only encourage new ideas and innovation,” says Arvanitakis.

    Other tenants include Queercircle, an LGBTQ +-led nonprofit that combines arts and social action, and ConceptKicks, a shoe design research project led by product designer Daniel Bailey. “We want cross-pollination of the creative sectors,” says Arvanitakis. “Each building is a mixture of sectors with no specific areas designated for one. That way, it will inspire collaborations. The plan is for everyone to go online: Creatives could do everything from 3D printing and food preparation, organizing events and scheduling photo ops, without leaving the neighborhood. Equally important is fostering a sense of community. “Collaboration is at the heart of our program,” says Ashley Joiner, founder of Queercircle, “especially since we provide a space where LGBTQ + people feel comfortable enough to go and meet new people” .

    Freelance freelancers are also in the sights of developers: a co-working space called Office is part of the scheme, offering office space from £ 125 per month. Nearby is Canteen, the neighborhood food hall, housed in a caterpillar-shaped structure designed by SelgasCano. There is a common basketball court and work classes for those who want to eat, work and soak up the environment.

    Two of the District’s buildings will be occupied by art and design exhibitions until October. A series of talks on fashion, design and creative innovation, hosted by Nick Compton of Wallpaper magazine, will take place from September 21 to 23. Other highlights include a hoarding installation by artist Lois O’Hara on buildings B3 and B4, recycled plastic furniture designed by Smile Plastics, and an electric bike pop-up for Polestar.

    Coinciding with the opening on September 15, visitors will also be able to admire Art Block, a free art exhibition in two of the buildings presented in collaboration with the neighboring NOW Gallery. A series of lectures is also scheduled for September 21-23, addressing topics such as design, fashion and crafts. Plans are forming for the opening of workshops throughout the neighborhood.

    With rising house prices and the lack of available workshops endangering many creative sectors in London, Design District is a welcome addition to the capital. The question, of course, is whether they can get away with it. The pandemic has changed the way people work, perhaps for good, and not just in London or among those in the design industry. Developers who have committed to huge office buildings in central shopping areas now find themselves on display: smaller, more flexible workspaces and mixed-use planning, in which small manufacturers sit alongside artist studios. and flexible offices, is a vision of the future.

    New residents are arriving this month. With the Design District just 15 minutes from central London on the tube and plans for a new station, 17,000 new homes and a park, the hope is that many more will follow. The performing arts group Clod Ensemble recently moved to the top floor of a building designed by Mole Architects, a multi-level structure clad in Corten steel with large slanted glass panels on the roof creating a bright space for the group. The whole dreamed “for a long time” of its own studio, explains its director Suzy Willson.

    Willson certainly hopes the time for the Greenwich Peninsula has finally come. “Initiatives that value and respect artists, understand the contribution they make to communities and provide them with affordable workspace are incredibly rare,” she says.
