Selby Gardens partners with Ringling to celebrate orchid show
The Marie Selby Botanical Garden will mingle circus heirlooms and Sarasota orchids at its next annual orchid show.
On view from October 9 to November 28 Aerials from the treetops to the marquee! takes place at the downtown Selby campus in Sarasota. It features orchids in the canopy of trees through the lens of circus performers, mostly aerials.
“We are delighted to present this year’s Orchid Show in conjunction with The Ringling,” said Jennifer Rominiecki, President and CEO of Selby Gardens. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to share the stories of our unique legacies in a creative and engaging way, a way that has never been done before.”
Sarasota has long been the home of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and circus performers and their families in the winter quarters here. The Ringling Museum complex displays circus collections within its Circus Museum. Sarasota’s circus tradition also extends to the Conservatory of Circus Arts and the Sailor Circus Academy, America’s oldest youth circus.
At the living room, guests can expect to see an abundance of bold patterns suspended at varying heights, creating an immersive experience.
The Museum of Botany & Arts will display vintage circus posters in the North Gallery, on loan from the Tibbals Circus Collection to the Ringling. The south gallery will focus on the orchids found growing on top of the canopies, their colors and patterns.
Virtual programming related to the exhibit is also planned, including botanical briefings with Selby’s vice president for botany, Bruce Holst, at noon on November 10, and one with Dr. David Berry, vice- Chair for Visitor Engagement and Chief Curator of the Museum, and Jennifer Lemmer Posey, Curator of Tibbals Circus at the Ringling, at noon on November 17. There will also be a show from local arts organizations at 6 p.m. on November 9.
